Fibromyalgia and Common Vision Problems

If you have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, visual problems aren’t our primary concern. In fact, they aren’t a normal consequence of fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. But they can arise as bothersome secondary problems that need special attention. I find my eye’s tend to bother me from:

· stress and fatigue of the syndrome

· complications of the various treatment options

Although no studies confirm a relationship between dry eye disease and fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue, I experience dry-eye symptoms. I am finding this leads to cloudy & unhealthy eyes & poor vision.

Artificial Tears Artificial tears are usually my first line of treatment. They are inexpensive & help with my vision problem.  But I have found some homeopathic formulas of artificial tears that work very well. Some contain the vitamins A, C, B6, and B12 and the bilberry.  Some of these are OTC whereas others, though nonprescription, must be purchased through an eye care professional.

Lately I have noticed the side effects of oral medications that are used to treat fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue syndrome can cause complications, although most of them are temporary and reversible. These side effects don’t just occur with prescription medications; they can also occur with over-the-counter medications. Some of these medications are: Tylenol, NSAIDs- these really cause problems for me, SSRI’s, SNRI’s, anti-seizure medications- Lyrica seems to cause double vision for many patients, and many of the narcotic meds effect vision.  The important thing is they side effects are usually reversible when the medication is withdrawn.

Considering all the aches, pains, and fatigue we have with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, the eye problems seem minor. But, when they occur, they may seem worse than they are, because the process of vision, and the eye’s comfort are highly energy dependent.

What is your experience- has your vision been effected by fibromyalgia?  Please share your story with us.
